Overview
I led the design of the Capture app from its ideation to launch. It’s aim is to provide first responder’s with the ability to capture evidentiary grade photos, videos and audio that they can easily upload to their agency’s digital evidence management tool and record management tool with the proper metadata related to the incident.
Problem
Officers need a means of capturing evidentiary grade media that they are able to review, add context to related to the incident, and upload to their records and evidence management tools.
Approach
While working alongside another designer, we interviewed patrol officers to understand their workflow of capturing media and at what times they would tag media with the proper incident and contextual tags. We then conducted several comparative analyses on media capturing applications including stock iOS and Android cameras, Instagram, VSCO, Snapchat, Voice Recorder, etc. We created personas, journey maps, information architecture maps which led to our wireframe designs.

Defining the MVP
Through close collaboration with the lead developers for iOS and Android, we were able to define the features that were required for at launch, including: photo, video, voice capturing, bookmarking, media gallery, incident number tagging, media tagging, media metadata, and media upload.

Documentation
For final handoff, we documented all components, screens, and prototypes including post-MVP scope work for Android and iOS.
Findings
Seek critical feedback early.
Despite the close collaboration between design and development, there could have been more honest conversations had early on when defining the MVP. Our ambition blinded us early, which resulted in inadequate time for build feedback and many features had to be marked as out of scope.
Future Work
Capture is currently a standalone application that is being absorbed into other Motorola handheld solution offerings, including the CommandCentral application in 2020. I will be the lead designer working to integrate the two solutions.
